Me at the SJT in Scarborough

At the SJT in Scarborough, 2018

With my dad and brother Joe sometime at the end of the Neolithic.

Gino, my cat.

I am an author and playwright. I write mainly children's historical fiction, fantasy and retellings of myths and legends. My latest books are set in Ancient Greece, the Islamic Golden Age, the Stone Age and Ancient Egypt.

In 2018, I wrote my first short story for adults, a Sherlock Holmes mystery called The Case of the Pressed Carnation. It was published in Sherlock Holmes' School for Detection, edited by Simon Clark and published by Robinson.

I also write for the theatre. My family musical Granny’s Exploding Toilet was sold out at the world-famous Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough. It will be followed by my all-woman version of Little Red Riding Hood which was delayed due to the pandemic. My new family musical Miti Miti is based on my bestelling The Orchard Book of First Greek Myths. It opens in Malta in November 2024 ahead of a European tour.

I've had homes in London, Brighton, Saltaire, Scarborough and Altea in Spain but now I live in the small market town of Driffield in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It's got a wonderful community feel, the High Street is full of independent shops and a there's an open air market every Thursday. The perfect place for a writer!

Away from the world of work, I am totally nuts about cats. I also enjoy collecting vintage china, cooking, travelling and having afternoon tea. I hope you enjoy exploring my site. Do get in touch if you want to know more or if you're looking to book me for a school visit or festival event.

All the best
